Icons, live music and 3.5 tonnes of clay.
Icon by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is an incomparable, stunning and down to earth-experience. Set design – 3.5 tonnes of clay – by world renowned sculptor Antony Gormley. Musicians and singers from Japan, Italy and Korea performing live.
Cult figures, politicians, religious leaders, role models. We create our icons, grant them power, worship them. All until the next regime, culture or trend sweeps, and we demolish our former idols to replace them with new icons. Why do we feel the need to create icons – and destroy the ones we no longer worship? What happens to us and to our society as we build our icons, and witness their downfall?
Icon is the second part of a trilogy created for GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, in which the choreographer departs from his usual spiritual or religious topics and focuses more on science, philosophy and sociology: Noetic, Icon and Stoic. With these three creations, GöteborgsOperans Danskompani has toured internationally to sold-out arenas.
Recording from the 2016/2017 season.
